The University of Illinois Sports Department acquired and operates Stone Creek Golf Club and transferred the property to the Illinois Department of Public Health and Human Services and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. More than two months have passed without college athletics resuming, and while the NCAA continues to evaluate when and how to return after the COVID-19 pandemic, a detailed plan for the future has been put in place.

Illinois has worked with the Illinois Department of Public Health and Human Services and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in drawing up this plan. All University of Illinois facilities, including the athletic department, athletics departments, and sports facilities, will benefit from these investments, which will include any revenue they may generate. These gifts do not count toward the NCAA Division I Intercollegiate Athletics Board's budget for the 2016-17 academic year.

That makes Illinois the fourth Big Ten school to announce a return to voluntary workouts, including Iowa, Nebraska and Ohio State. Since then, most teams, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa State, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina and Wisconsin, have returned. The cross-country skiers will also return for the 2016-17 season after Illinois decided to bring back last year's golf and tennis programs, as well as the men's and women's tennis teams.

Ohio State has been a contender for national football titles since joining the conference in 1912, and Illinois is only a side aspect. Purdue's basketball tradition is similar to Illinois's - lots of success and a lot of heartbreak on top of that. It's really, really hard to think of the Badgers as football rivals these days, especially in the days when Illinois hasn't won a game since the game against 12. Illinois has had more ups than downs, but it has gone down in history as one of the most successful programs in college football history.

The men's swimmers and water jumpers were the Big Ten in 1911, 1912 and 1913, but retired from competitive sport in 1993. The outdoor track and field athletes have won three national championships and one national championship in women's athletics.

We had a surprising loss to Missouri, lost a 91-88 to Rutgers and had to have a piece of the Big Ten title to win it.

Illinois has more than one option, but the thing is that most of the options listed by Illinois fans and graduates and asked about it would not consider Illinois as their primary rival. Purdue fans loathe the Hoosiers as much as the Illinois ones, and they don't have the power to tell Indiana which school is next on the list. The Boilermakers might be a little annoyed that there are so many other teams in the Big Ten with so much talent. But "Illinois - pure hate" may not be as one-way street as some think.

The men's gymnastics team was invited to 44 NCAA tournaments and won an NCAA championship with 10 teams, the second-highest winning percentage of any team in school history. Fighting Illinois baseball has one of the best winning rates in college baseball history, and Illinois was ranked 11th at the end of the 2013-14 season. Illinois has played seven times against Northwestern in the Big Ten, beating its opponent more than any other school team in history and with a .500 record.

The University of Illinois had 24 NCAA national champions, the youngest being the 2012-13 men's basketball team and the 2013-14 women's volleyball team. Fighting for the title in men's basketball, including the school's first ever national championship. The Illinois volleyball team has remained in the nation's top 10 since moving from Kenney Gym to Huff Hall in 1990, and has been in the nation's top 10 ever since.

The basketball program is at a similar crossroads, while Iowa Football seems light years ahead of Illinois. The Hoosiers are players on the national stage, especially compared to their rivals in the Big Ten, Indiana and Indiana State. Northwestern is slightly larger than Illinois in terms of total student-athlete numbers, but its living alumnus base is much smaller in numbers than Illinois. Marching Illinois is represented at the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign, as well as at the U of I College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and Illinois State University.
