Urbana suffered a setback when the Chicago branch of the Illinois Central Railroad, which was to cross the city, was moved three miles west where the land was flat. After investigating the country, the railroad decided to run its tracks two miles west of Urbanas.

After the railroad was completed, this short-lived structure became part of the Indianapolis, Bloomington and Western Railway. The line, now operated by Norfolk Southern, is the former Peoria and Eastern Railway, which was later operated as part of the Big Four. Urbana's main line from Danville to Decatur connected Sidney, Illinois, to the country, but was first diverted and later closed in the early 1990s. In 1996, Conrail was sold to Norfolk Southern and the line reopened as Chicago and Northern Illinois Railroad.
